How to Become an X-Ray Technician

Becoming a qualified x-ray technician is a process. First, you have to select a high-quality training program and then obtain your certificate or degree. Next, there are decisions to be made about registration and licensure, if required by your state. Read on to learn how to become an x-ray tech.

What should I consider when choosing an x-ray technician program?

• Students have the option of pursuing a one-year certificate, two-year associate degree, or four-year bachelor degree. Bachelor degrees, generally, improve one's immediate earning potential.
• Not all x-ray technician programs are accredited by The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, the field's most respected accrediting body. To become an x-ray technician, it is important to seek a JRCERT-accredited program.
• Earning your x-ray technician degree or certificate from a non-JRCERT-accredited school can limit your career opportunities, as only graduates of accredited institutions are eligible for registration by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Additionally, the ARRT certification is required for licensure in many states.

Why should I register with the ARRT? What's the process?

• Many employers prefer radiographers registered by the ARRT. Registration is also a requirement of licensure in many states.
• To be eligible for registration, candidates must graduate from a program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
• Candidates also must pass the ARRT's national certification exam.
• To maintain their ARRT registration, x-ray techs must complete 24 hours of continuing education every other year. With additional experience and training, radiographers can become higher-paid specialists, supervisors, administrators, and educators.
