Where are x-ray technician programs offered?
- X-ray tech programs are available at technical institutes, community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and hospitals, as well as within the U.S. Armed Forces.
- X-ray technician programs generally range from one to four years. Aspiring radiographers have the option of earning a one-year certificate, two-year associate degree, or four-year bachelor degree.
- Most individuals enter the radiography field with an associate degree from a community or technical college. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits more than 1,000 x-ray tech programs.
Do x-ray technician programs have admission requirements?
- Certificate and two-year associate degree programs require at least a high-school diploma. Completion of high-school science classes, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, also is recommended.
- Bachelor degree programs have more rigorous requirements, including entrance examinations and application essays.
What are the benefits of different kinds of x-ray tech programs?
- Certificate and associate-level x-ray technician programs provide students the necessary training to apply for entry-level positions in the field.
- Some accelerated certificate programs allow working radiographers to specialize in different areas of radiography, such as computed tomography, mammography, and bone densitometry. Certificate programs also provide other health workers, such as registered nurses, the opportunity to practice radiography.
- Bachelor degrees prepare individuals for supervisory, administrative, and teaching roles.
